My Septum Jewelry

As was promised my septum jewelry…

If we’re going to discuss septum jewelry then we need to discuss a few other things first.

Gauge: Gauges are a unit of measurement that describes the thickness of the metal ‘bar’ portion jewelry is. Gauge is also used a thickness measurement for wire and medical needles. Gauge is not a verb… (well that’s not true gauge is a verb when it is used as a synonym for estimate) but its not a verb in the sense to what you do with piercings. You stretch piercings and you do not gauge them.

Common Septum Sizes: 16g and 14g I’ve also seen 18g. Mine was pierced at 14 gauge. Septums are another piercing that is often stretched. That’s not something I know anything about so I don’t feel comfortable discussing it here.

Other Jewelry Specs: So If your looking at septum jewelry you’ll notice another measurement. If you are in a place that uses the imperial system like the US then it will be in fractions of inches the smallest is ¼ ,there is also 5/16 (my preference in size) and if you are living in the rest of the world it will be in mm. This measurement is internal diameter. This size dictates how far the jewelry will hang out of your nose. I prefer my septum jewelry to be close to my nose ¼ is too small for me it squeezes my nose and I can’t stand it touching my upper lip.. so 5/16 works best for me. As for what size you should buy that all depends on your astatic preferences and your noses anatomy. I recommend asking your piercer what your initial jewelry was and tell them if there is a specific look that you are trying to achieve ask them what size that might be for you.

Jewelry Quality: I don’t want to sound like a snob. And I don’t want to make anyone feel like crap about their jewelry. You’ll notice that the majority of my jewelry is a little bit more expensive that what you might find at Hot Topic and Spencer’s. I used to get offended when people would make a comment about low quality jewelry from places like Hot Topic. I thought, ‘I’m poor and I want pretty things.” Thing is those pieces if worn everyday fall apart and start to look bad quite quickly. So I ended up spending more on jewelry than if I had just bought a nicer piece. My Neo Metal in my ears I’ve had for nearly 2 years and they still look as good as new when I polish them up after wearing them for a while. You’ll also notice that low quality jewelry that is in pretty colors will have color flake off because it was coated not anodized. I haven’t owned any like that for my septum. It’s in the middle of my face I try to get the best I can. But that’s not saying that you can’t buy the really pretty lower priced body jewelry I would just recommend not wearing it all the time just wear it to whatever it is you want to look special for and then change it back to a titanium retainer when you get home. Heck I usually do that anyways.

Now I do not have an example of every type of jewelry that can can be shoved in a septum. But I’ll try and cover them too.

CBR: Captive bead ring. You know the tiny pain in the ass rings with a little ball that you fight with to get it into the ring? Yeah those things. I’ve had them for my cartilage piercings and they are an absolute worst. You can put them in your septum but I hate them so I don’t own any.

Segment Rings: These are basically CBRs except its not a ball that completes the ring it’s a piece or get this, a ‘segment’ that pops out and back in. I don’t own any of these either but its not because I have anything against them like I do the CBRs since I’ve never tried one before. Have you tried these before? Let me know if you have and what you think of them!

Would you be interested in me doing videos about how to put my various types of septum jewelry in? What’s your favorite type? What does your septum jewelry collection include?
